COVENTRY, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island is renaming a bridge to honor one of its leading Revolutionary War heroes.
The Rhode Island Department of Transportation says the newly rebuilt Laurel Avenue Bridge will be rededicated the Maj. Gen. Nathanael Greene Memorial Bridge.
The bridge, which crosses the Pawtuxet River, was heavily damaged during the 2010 floods. The rebuilt bridge was opened Nov. 8.
Greene was a Rhode Island native who during the Revolution rose from the rank of private to become a top military leader under George Washington.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee and U.S. Sens. Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse are scheduled to formally rededicate the bridge on Monday.
