Chicken ordinance approved for Cranston

CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) -- Residents in Cranston can now have fresh eggs daily from their own property.

The city council approved an ordinance Monday night that allows residents to keep chickens, but not roosters, on their property for egg production.

City homeowners are allowed one chicken per 800 square feet of property, and can have up to 10 chickens.

Residents at the public hearing sounded off on the ordinance.

“If you want to impact Cranston with more rats, you are opening up the door with an invitation.”

“This is about understanding what is safe for our families. The people who choose to raise backyard chickens are choosing a safe form of food.” 

Homeowners are now required to submit chicken coop building plans, and keep chickens confined from sunrise to sunset.
