COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) -- The Central Coventry Fire District's budget proposal has been rejected.

Taxpayers voted down the proposal Monday night.

The decision means the district will likely close and consolidate with other existing districts in the town.

In January, Rhode Island State Police opened an investigation into the district because it had reportedly failed to make proper payments into the pension system over the course of nearly two years.
