Police: Distracted driving caused fatal crash

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (AP/WPRI) -- State police say a head-on crash on the Mount Hope Bridge that killed a man and injured five other people was caused by a distracted driver.
State police Capt. Frank Castellone told The Providence Journal that 63-year-old Paul Matthews of Barrington was "somehow distracted" when his van crossed the center line and struck an oncoming Toyota RAV Saturday evening.
Troopers say Matthews was not wearing a seat belt and died after he was partially thrown from the van. A passenger in Matthews' van and four people in the Toyota were injured. State police say the most seriously injured person is in good condition at Rhode Island Hospital.
The investigation has ruled out drunken driving so far.
The Mount Hope Bridge was closed for about three hours while crews responded to the wreck, and was reopened by just 10 p.m Saturday.
