NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - A former New York Times chief executive officer has been named chairwoman of the board of trustees of Salve Regina University in Rhode Island.

The Newport university announced Thursday that Janet Robinson has been appointed to the post effective immediately.

She is a 1972 graduate of Salve Regina who retired from the Times on Dec. 31.

Robinson succeeds Joseph DiStefano, who retired after serving as chairman since 1993.

She graduated cum laude with a bachelor's degree in English and was awarded an honorary doctorate in business administration in 1998. She presented the university's commencement address in 2003, urging graduates to always remember their roots.

Robinson worked at the Times for 28 years and was named president and chief executive in 2004, the first woman to hold those posts.
