NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) - Four college students injured in a crash at the Breakers mansion are recovering in the hospital, officials said Friday.

The students from Salve Regina University were seriously hurt when their SUV smashed into the front gate of the Breakers early Thursday morning. All four 19-year-olds were taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

A hospital spokesperson said Michael Canning, the man police said was driving the SUV, was in serious condition Friday. The other three victims were said to be in fair condition.

Police are still investigating the crash. They said speed may have been a factor.
