NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - While Superstorm Sandy may be fresh in many people's minds, a historical society in Rhode Island is seeking to preserve images of the event for use by future historians.

The Newport Historical Society is asking local residents to submit digital photos and video showing preparation for Sandy, the storm itself and the aftermath.

The historical society says submitted photos and videos will be considered for a place in its permanent collection, and could be used by researchers and school children.

Superstorm Sandy toppled trees and flooded coastal areas in southern Rhode Island, damaging homes, eroding local beaches and knocking out electricity for thousands of utility customers.
