RI contractor fined for cave-in hazards

Workers found in unsafe trench in Middletown

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (WPRI) - A Newport contractor is facing more $117,000 in fines for allegedly putting workers in danger.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited Raymond J. Cawley Contracting for cave-in hazards during a sewer line replacement project in Middletown.

According to a news release from the U.S. Department of Labor, an OSHA inspection found two workers inside an eight-foot-deep trench on West Main Road that was not properly shored or sloped to prevent the sidewalls from caving in.

OSHA requires all trenches five feet or deeper be protected against collapse.

OSHA also cited the company because the workers were not wearing helmets, and because they were not adequately trained to recognize the hazards.

Raymond J. Cawley Contracting was given 15 days to pay the fines or contest the findings.
