PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Five Rhode Island golf courses have become the first in the state to be certified as green under a program launched in 2010.
The state Department of Environmental Management says the self-certification program is aimed at reducing the effects that golf courses have on the environment in the areas of water usage, chemicals used for fertilization and pest control, energy consumption and solid waste and air emissions.
Meadow Brook Golf Course in Richmond is the only public course to be certified. The four other courses are private.
They are Alpine Country Club in Cranston, Shelter Harbor Golf Club in Charlestown, Sakonnet Golf Club in Little Compton and Point Judith Country Club in Narragansett.
