Union leader backs Chafee on pensions

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- The head of the Rhode Island's largest public sector union is applauding Gov. Lincoln Chafee's calls for pension negotiations.

Yesterday, the governor told Target 12 Investigator Tim White that both sides should come to the table as the landmark reform law is challenged in court.

Now, Council 94 President Michael Downey says there's still time to compromise to prevent a lengthy legal battle.

The law passed year reduced the state's pension debt by freezing cost of living adjustments and creating a hybrid 401(k) style pension system.

The unions have sued, saying the law breaks a contract the state made with its employees.

A court hearing is scheduled for Friday on a motion to dismiss that suit.
