PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- The state is asking the Rhode Island Supreme Court to bar a judge from hearing a challenge to the state's pension overhaul law.
The Providence Journal reports that lawyers are trying to block Superior Court Judge Sarah Taft-Carter's decision to remain on the case.
Taft-Carter's son is a state trooper, and her mother collects a $22,000-a-year benefit from her late husband, former Cranston Mayor James Taft.
Taft-Carter chose not to recuse herself last week. She says her family's financial interest is insignificant, and it won't affect her impartiality.
