Many school districts back in session

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Some Southern New England schools remain closed due to the power outages, and others are shut down because the streets and sidewalks aren't safe enough for students.

Although, students in some districts such as Providence and Warwick are back in the classroom Tuesday morning.

Even with the blizzard behind us, there are still many dangers out there for those traveling to school or work. Many sidewalks haven't been shoveled, forcing kids and adults to have to walk in the street.

Some communities require residents and businesses to clear their sidewalks, though not everyone has followed through.

Large snow banks can block views of drivers who may not see children crossing the street.

"Don't assume a driver is going to see you, don't jump out from behind a snow bank because they may not have the visibility to see you," said Annemarie Beardsworth of the RI Emergency Management Agency.

Another issue is the threat of vehicles getting stuck, as evidenced by the photo above from Glover Street in Providence Tuesday morning.
