PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Rhode Island leaders were meeting at the State House Tuesday evening to discuss school safety and preparedness.

The previously-scheduled meeting of the Senate Committee on Education took place just hours after the nation's latest school shooting at Lone Star College in Houston, and one month after the tragic killing of twenty students and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Among those participating in Tuesday's hearing were Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah Gist and Rhode Island State Police Superintendent Colonel Steven O'Donnell.
