PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Massachusetts state police gave a warning for erratic driving to a Rhode Island official after he failed field sobriety tests but passed an alcohol breath test.
Police say they pulled over Richard Licht, Gov. Lincoln Chafee's director of administration, on Jan. 9 on Route 128 in Westwood, just southwest of Boston. Troopers say Licht failed three of four field sobriety tests, had slurred speech and smelled of alcohol.
But police say Licht passed a breath test at the Framingham barracks. They say his blood-alcohol level was 0.05, below the 0.08 limit.
Licht told The Providence Journal that he had one drink with dinner and was using his cell phone while driving. He called the incident a "wakeup call" that he should pay better attention while driving.
