PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The Providence Fire Department is awarded thousands of dollars to help prevent fires before they happen.

On Tuesday, Rhode Island-based insurance company FM Global presented the Providence Fire Department with a $4,000 grant.  The money will be used to educate the public on fire safety and fire prevention strategies.

In a news release, Acting Fire Chief Michael Dillon said the funding will help ensure that every home in Providence has working smoke detectors.
