$1.7 million in aid for fire departments

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island is getting nearly $1.7 million in federal funding to recruit more volunteer firefighters across the state and to help two municipalities buy more equipment.

The Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs Foundation is getting about $974,000 to recruit and train volunteer firefighters. The fire departments in Pawtucket and Bristol are getting nearly $679,000 to upgrade breathing apparatus.

The state's four-member congressional delegation announced the funding Friday.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed said the funds will ensure that firefighters have the proper equipment and support and that local fire departments are well-trained and staffed.

The fire chiefs foundation says volunteer firefighters protect 60 percent of the land area in Rhode Island.
