Federal funds to help housing agencies

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Ten Rhode Island housing agencies will share nearly $900,000 in federal funding aimed at helping residents of public housing become economically independent.

The money comes from two programs of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development that are designed to increase self-sufficiency through job training and employment. The money will go to hire or retain 15 local service coordinators who will help connect families receiving assistance with supportive services.

Program participants must sign a contract that requires the head of household to get a job and stop receiving welfare assistance after a five-year period.

Housing authorities in Providence, Pawtucket, Central Falls and other towns are getting awards.

U.S. Sen. Jack Reed says the programs are geared towards helping people help themselves.
