Convicted molester sentenced to life

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- A convicted child molester who had two previous molestation convictions overturned was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday.

James Oliveira had been sentenced to 40 years behind bars back in 2006 for molesting a 6-year-old boy, but that conviction was thrown out by the Rhode Island Supreme Court two years later after the justices ruled that a tape of a jailhouse interview should not have been allowed at trial.

The state Supreme Court ordered a retrial, which led to a second conviction in 2012.

In Providence Superior Court Wednesday, Oliveira was sentenced again, this time to life in prison.

If he is ever released, he will be required to register as a sex offender and will be GPS monitored for therest of his life.

Oliveira was convicted of molesting another child in 1985, but the Rhode Island Supreme Court overturned that conviction as well, in 1990.
