Students deliver unused food to shelter

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Two Providence College students have started a program on campus called Friar Food Rescue.

Dave O'Connor and Nick Canessa organize the delivery of leftover or unused food from the College's Dining Services to local shelters in the area.

The pair has delivered more than 700 pounds of food to the McAuley House in Providence so far, after just seven visits.

The deliveries take place on Friday mornings at 10:00 a.m.

Most of the food that's transported is prepared food that's kept frozen.

The students came up with this idea through their interest in the Food Recovery Network , a national organization that encourages college campuses and organizations to donate all leftover or unused food.
