GM recalls SUVs due to fire hazard

(WPRI) -- More than a quarter of a million General Motors and Isuzu vehicles are being recalled due to a potential danger of catching fire.

The recall was first announced Saturday after the power window and door-lock switches were found to potentially short circuit and catch fire.

Even though more than 250,000 vehicles are being recalled, the remedy plan is still being finalized, leaving drivers with a lot of questions.

Car safety expert Sean Kane says the recalls are troubling because they're only affecting certain areas of the country, more specifically the areas that deal with cold weather and where road salt is used.

"A lot of these cars cross borders and don't stay in one area, and yet we've seen cars outside of these states have problems but aren't covered by the recall," he said.

According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), water may enter the driver's door, causing corrosion, which in turn can cause a short circuit in the board, which could spark a fire.

Owners of the Chevrolet and GMC models being recalled will be notified by GM. Anyone with questions is asked to contact the owner center.
