Drivers dealing with deep freeze

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - With temperatures falling to the single-digits, many drivers are hoping their cars won't give them fits when they turn the ignition.

AAA of Southern New England is offering some reminders to keep your vehicles running right.

They include making sure your battery is fully charged and working properly, because temperatures this low can take a toll on battery power.

Experts also drive you to make sure your car has enough oil, fuel and coolant.

Charles Hewitt of East Providence believes in proper car maintenance.

"Change the oils and keep your gas topped off," Hewitt said, "Check your tires once a week, check all fuels. It's very basic common sense. I would tell anyone to do that."

While many drivers think they need to run their car for a while to get it "warmed up", AAA says that is not necessary.  Instead, experts advise you let your vehicle run for a minute, then slowly drive until it comes up to operating temperature.
