PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A hit-and-run accident involving a Department of Public Works employee happened right outside of the DPW building in Providence on Saturday.

The accident happened around 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of Ernest Street and Allens Avenue.

35-year-old David Cepeda of Warwick is charged with leaving the scene of an accident, driving with a suspended license, refusing a chemical breath test and three other non-criminal motor vehicle offenses.

The two passengers in the other car were not hurt, but the car was damaged so badly it had to be towed.

The mayor's office released a statement regarding the incident, saying that "city employees should be held to a high standard of conduct, and he will not tolerate behavior from any employee that falls short of those standards. The mayor will hold the employee involved in Saturday’s incident accountable and supports the police department’s pursuit of criminal charges. ”

The accident remains under investigation.
