State's tree lighting ceremony back on

Governor spokeswoman: Comments were a mistake

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Governor Lincoln Chafee's office announced there will indeed be an official tree lighting ceremony at the State House, despite Monday's statement that it was canceled this year.

"In response to several inquiries, I mistakenly said that there would be no tree lighting ceremony," said the governor's director of communications, Christine Hunsinger in a statement released Tuesday.

State officials had decided not to have a lighting ceremony following the uproar last December over whether to call it a "holiday" or "Christmas" tree.

"That information was incorrect and a result of a miscommunication among staff. There will be an official tree lighting ceremony at the State House with the Governor in attendance. The date and time of the event will be announced when the details are finalized," added Hunsinger.

The official tree was quietly lit in the State House on Monday.

Last year hundreds gathered for the lighting.
