(WPRI) - A Portsmouth native and top Boston Red Sox prospect is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday in Arizona for a rare brain condition.
Ryan Westmoreland, 19, was diagnosed with a cavernous malformation, a mass of abnormal blood vessels in his brain.
Doctors discovered the condition after the Portsmouth High School graduate began experiencing headaches.
The procedure Westmoreland is undergoing is very risky, according to doctors, but there is a chance it will be a success and Westmoreland will be able to return to baseball.
