CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) - On Perkins Avenue in Cranston, dramatic water rescues played out over and over again on Monday.
On Elmwood Avenue, the Pawtuxet River reached record levels, creeping closer and closer to the bridge. Down the road, cars were submerged by water.
"We're watching the weather forecast like everyone else, but a lot depends on, like we said, we're monitoring the dams as well because that could create more of an influx of water," said Cranston Mayor Allan Fung.
Mayor Fung said at this point the dams are not in jeopardy. Still, several streets throughout the city, like Wellington Avenue, are closed due to flooding.
In some parts of the city, residents had to be evacuated from their homes.
Brenda Furtado said, "Scary, scary because we're going to lose everything again. The second time in less than five years."
In 2005, she said, her and her husband paid $32,000 dollars to repair flood damage. They don't know what will happen to their home this time, but they say it's time for the city to step in.
"The city should just condemn this street and let the river take it. Get rid of all the houses, because everyone is in jeopardy," said Furtado.
"We're at historic levels with the Pawtuxet River right now, so while it's frustrating, we are working to ensure the safety of all residents to the best of our abilities."
