Mystic employees vote whether to establish a union

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- The results of a months-long union organizing drive at the Mystic Seaport will soon be known as more than 200 employees vote on whether to establish a union.

The Seaport has turned a profit with a modest increase in visitors, but it had to lay off some workers and close during the winter.

Employees now want more of a say in how the 83-year-old tourist destination is run. A union election is scheduled for Aug. 17.

Management of the Seaport, which celebrates New England's maritime past, is fighting the union drive by AFT Connecticut, an affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers.

A spokesman says the Seaport recognizes there is room for improvement, but not with a union.

Visitors may tour exhibits, a recreated 19th century coastal village and a shipyard.
