Anti-Semitic graffiti found at Wheaton

Campus and Norton Police investigating vandalism

NORTON, Mass. (WPRI) -- Norton Police and Wheaton College campus police are investigating a disturbing act of vandalism.

Anti-Semitic graffiti was discovered Sunday morning on the back door of the college's Jewish Life House at 17 Howard Street in Norton.

In an email to faculty and students, Wheaton President Ronald Crutcher revealed that this was not the first time students at the Jewish Life House had been targeted.

"I am told that this is the latest, and most visible, expression of hate to which these students have been subjected, but not the first. Offensive and derogatory remarks have been shouted from the street, as recently as Friday evening," Crutcher wrote.

Crutcher vowed to get to the bottom of the crime, and reminded that it violates the colleges honor code.

"I want to be clear: this will not be tolerated," Crutcher wrote.  "Every individual -- student, faculty, and staff member -- has the right to feel welcomed and safe on our campus and in our community."

The Anti-Defamation League released a statement Monday condemning the hateful act of vandalism.

Anyone with information about the vandalism is asked to contact the Norton Police Department at 508-285-3300, the Wheaton Public Safety Department, or the Wheaton College Dean of Students Office.
