ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) -- Police in Attleboro are investigating a late-night shooting in their city.

Officers responded to a home on Smith Street at about 11 p.m. Sunday after hearing reports of gunfire.

They found Michael Briggs, 29, shot at least once in the torso inside the home. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he received surgery and is now in stable condition.

Animal control was also called to the residence to take away a large dog so the investigation could continue.

As a result of the investigation, officers discovered a "multitude" of illegal narcotics, including 18 large marijuana plants, 54 grams of cocaine and Oxycodone pills, and $25,000 cash inside the home, what they're calling a "large distribution ring."

"It was definitely not a random act of violence, we believe it was part in parcel with his drug operation, that the people who perpetrated this crime knew what was going on at the home," said Attleboro Police Chief Kyle Heagney. "As this gentleman found out, when you're in the drug trade, you dance to the tune, you've got to pay the fiddler."

They said that two other people were in the home at the time of the shooting, but were not cooperative.

So far no arrests have been made in the case. Police tell us they're looking for a pair of black males who left the scene in a dark sedan.
