SEEKONK, Mass. (WPRI) -- It's been called one of the most dangerous intersections in the state of Massachusetts. Now, selectmen have approved a traffic light at the intersection of The Old Grist Mill to prevent future accidents.
A truck crash sparked a fire at The Old Grist Mill back in June, destroying the Seekonk restaurant. Since then, town officials have been looking for ways to make the stretch of roadway safer for motorists.
The town has decided to convert the intersection at Fall River Ave., Arcade Ave and Mill Rd. from a stop sign control to a traffic light. The change will take effect in 2014.
The Seekonk Board of Selectmen voted on the approval on Wednesday. The traffic signal won out a previously discussed roundabout.
The cost of the project will be about $2.8 million, which is paid for with state and federal money.
