Storm brings some snow, lots of wind

FALL RIVER, MASS. (WPRI) -- For the second weekend in a row, a winter storm is bringing some snow to southern New England.

The storm isn't forecasted to bring much more than 6 inches of snow but the main feature is the wind, which is expected to remain steadily around 15-25 mph with occasional gusts to 45 mph.  

In Fall River Sunday morning, scarcely more than an inch had fallen, leaving area roads in good shape, but the whipping winds blew around even that small amount of snow and caused some drifting.

The blowing snow caused a handful of traffic problems in East Providence, leading to some slipping and sliding on Route 6.  So far no major roadway accidents have been reported.

By early afternoon the snow will cease and skies will slowly clear, but temps will stay in the 20s.  The Cape and Islands could see as much as 10 inches but Rhode Island and nearby Bristol County, Mass., will likely only get about 6 inches.

A number of parking bans are in effect and the storm did prompt several cancelations and closings:

• The Rite of Election scheduled for 3pm at St. Mary's Cathedral in Fall River has been canceled.
• Buttonwood Park Zoo in New Bedford is closed Sunday.
