(WPRI) -- Stop & Shop stores across New England are preparing for a possible workers strike.

According to the Fall River Herald, the supermarket chain and its local unions are currently attempting to negotiate a new contract.

Stop & Shop began advertising on Sunday to hire replacement employees if the unions should go on strike.

The company operates 217 stores in Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire, employing about 36,000 workers.

The current contract is due to expire on Feb. 23.
