Protective eye wear reduces serious eye injuries

PROVIDENCE, R. I. (WPRI) – A national study led by local researchers tackles the dangers of a popular high school sport.
The study led by Hasbro Children’s Hospital found that high school field hockey players competing in states with mandated protective eye wear are five times less likely to suffer from eye injuries compared to those stated without protective eye wear mandates.
The study examined injuries among high school players 14-18 years of age during the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.
The researchers also found that concussion rates were similar for athletes from states with mandated protective eye wear and athletes from states with no protective eye wear mandate.
The findings were published in the medical journal “Pediatrics”.
