WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) - After foot-deep floodwaters covered Interstate 95 on Tuesday, detours off the now-closed highway during the Wednesday morning commute left many drivers frustrated.
Southbound traffic was forced off the interstate at Exit 14 onto Route 37, while northbound traffic had to take Exit 11 onto I-295. Traffic backed up for miles before those exits on I-95, and the resulting gridlock caused hours of delays.
For a current listing of road closures and detours, drivers can tune in to DOT Radio AM 1630.
"I'm stressed, but I'm sure everyone else is too. My kids are stressed, they are hungry, they want to eat," said Maureen Volk.
Maureen Volk, who was heading home with her two children to deal with a flooded basement, said she had been stuck for more than an hour when an Eyewitness News crew caught up with her.
It's not clear when I-95 will reopen.
Rhode Island State Police have issued a travel advisory.
