35th anniversary of Blizzard of 78'

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - On this day 35 years ago, the Blizzard of 78' buried Rhode Islanders under more than two feet of snow, devastating the state and bringing southern New England to its knees.

Thousands were caught off guard as traffic stopped on I-95 as well as other local roads and highways.

The storm was also responsible for roughly one-hundred fatalities in the northeast.

On Wednesday morning, many awoke to a very different scene, just a dusting of snow fell across our area overnight.

Snow plow drivers were out and about  sanding the roadways in order to keep them safe for drivers.

"I don't mind it at all. Never get bored of New England you get four seasons. Never get bored I love it," Tony Sousa said.

Eyewitness News Meteorologist Michelle Muscatello says there is a "potentially significant winter storm" on the way for Friday.

Muscatello says there will likely be "plowable" accumulation, especially away from the immediate coast.  The height of the storm looks to be Friday afternoon through Friday night.

She says there are still uncertainties about the exact track and intensity of the storm, which will affect accumulation amounts. But, there is a high chance of six or more inches of snow and maybe even one foot or more far inland.
