NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) - North Smithfield police are now offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for vandalizing a sign at a Muslim temple.

It happened on Sayles Hill Rd., at the Masjid al-Islam.

Surveillance video recorded around 3:30 a.m. Sunday shows a person driving into the mosque's parking lot and head-butting the sign, then breaking it.

In light of the shooting at the Sikh temple in Wisconsin, which also happened Sunday, members have made an appeal to police and the FBI for additional protection.

They said they were concerned the vandalism might be part of a larger pattern against Muslims, or people perceived as Muslim.

Police also said they're adding more patrols near the mosque and doing frequent security checks.

The FBI and state police are assisting in the investigation.
