LAS VEGAS (AP/WPRI) -- 20 year-old Cranston native Miss USA Olivia Culpo was crowned Miss Universe.

She beat out 88 competitors Wednesday night to win the title at the Planet Hollywood casino on the Las Vegas Strip.

She strutted in a purple and blue bikini and a red velvet gown and answered a question about her regrets by saying she wished she hadn't picked on her siblings.

It was the 61st anniversary of the world's biggest beauty pageant.

Culpo takes the crown from Leila Lopes of Angola.

Miss Philippines Janine Tugonon came in second while Miss Venezuela Irene Sofia Esser Quintero placed third.

The pageant was streamed to more than 100 countries.

Late Wednesday night US Congressman David Cicilline issued the following statement on Olivia's big win.

"I congratulate Cranston's Olivia Culpo on becoming just the eighth American in 60 years to be crowned Miss Universe. As the first Rhode Islander to become Miss USA, Olivia had already made us proud, and her success tonight is an even greater source of pride for the Ocean State. I know that I join all Rhode Islanders in wishing her continued success."
