Retired officer's service weapon stolen
East Greenwich police are investigating stolen gun

EAST GREENWICH, RI (WPRI) - East Greenwich Police are trying to track down a gun that was stolen from the home of a retired high ranking officer from the East Greenwich Police Department.
According to police, the crime was the second in a series of three break-ins since Tuesday. Detective Sergeant Jon T. Chirnside said the homes were unoccupied at the time of the crimes.
Retired East Greenwich Deputy Chief William Higgins confirmed for Target 12 that his home was broken into Wednesday. Higgins would not elaborate on the details surrounding the crime.
According to police, a .45 caliber service weapon and ammunition was stolen from Higgins' home. East Greenwich allows its retired officers to purchase their service guns and a police department spokesman said that’s why Higgins still had his.
The third burglary happened Thursday at a home on Howland Road. The first in the string occurred on Tuesday on Eugene Street.
Investigators said there are a number of similarities with the three cases including the times when the suspect struck. Chirnside said the crimes were committed between mid-morning and early afternoon. Chirnside also said jewelry was stolen in all three break-ins,
