WARWICK, R.I. (FOX Providence) - While many kids these days spend hours in front of their television playing video games, some local students are hoping to turn this hobby into a very sophisticated and lucrative career.
With blockbuster movies like Batman and Iron Man making money in the hundreds of millions of dollars, it was a video game, Grand Theft Auto Four that made more then those two movies combined, and grossed over $500 million in its first week alone.
It's become quite clear that the video game industry is no longer a rainy day hobby. The formal discipline has now become available, offering students who may start with no computer savvy at all, the chance to graduate with the knowledge and aptitude to be able to design their own video games from scratch.
The skills learned at New England Tech teach students about 3D art, scripting and game design, advanced computer languages and game architecture.
Graduates are qualified to become junior game developers and programmers, as well as high level game designers.
They are also prepared for other jobs in the software field. New England Tech offers both associate and bachelor degrees in gaming design.
