(FOX Providence) - Technology is everywhere, so why not embrace it by becoming educated in information technology?

"Information Technology is the management of digital information, computer systems, the networks that connect them, the programs that are written to allow the information to be stored, so the networks can connect them," said Timothy Culhane, Associate Professor of Information Technology at New England Institute of Technology.

Throughout the various courses, students will learn at multiple levels.

"At upper-level, the projects tend to be more a little more involved. Everything from building servers to connecting the servers, crossing network, putting in the right gear, configuring the gear, so that it works. Some of these are long-term projects that literally go from planning stages to the implementation stage," said Culhane.

Students will also encounter real world situations to prepare for their future.

"By having a firm theoretical foundation of the material when our students graduate and they are out in the real world and they run cross problems. They have to trouble shoot, they have to build anything from scratch. They have the theoretical background to be able do that," added Culhane.

The success of a course in Information Technology comes from the combination of lectures and hands-on experience.

"They actually touch the gear, plug in the gear, play with the gear, program the gear, they write the programs, they deal with security issues, they see examples of it, they work on examples of it, all the way through till they finish their degree when they have projects they have to put together from scratch, based on a number of different parameters that we give to them, so it's good training, it's good education."

The next time you have a computer problem that needs to be fixed, you may encounter a graduate from New England Institute of Technology.

"A student coming out with a degree could work in a tech shop, the kind of place where a customer could in and say 'my computer just exploded on me, can you fix it? Something went wrong. Something happened to my screen. Can you fix it?' And they can fix it," said Culhane.

With a degree in Information Technology, you have the ability to implement wireless systems, write software designed for a specific business, or even become a project coordinator for world-wide companies.
