PLYMOUTH, MA (FOX Providence) - Thanksgiving is fast approaching, and today in Going Places, we take you on a trip to America's hometown... Plymouth, Massachusetts.
Rich with history and tradition, Plymouth is a gem, and less than an hour from Providence.
After landing on Plymouth Rock, the pilgrims walked off the Mayflower and made Plymouth their home. And many of their structures still stand and thrive today. Leo martin is the Director of Education at the Jenney Grist Mill and provides tours of the historic site.
“The Jenney Grist Mill happens to be the site of the oldest mill in the United States. This mill was originally built to be 374 years ago by a gentleman named John Jenney, hence the name.
Now please keep in mind, while John did live in Plymouth Plantation, he did not come on the Mayflower. He came three years later on a boat called the Little James.
See, in Plymouth, we have a group of people we call the first-comers. The first-comers came on the first four ships, the Mayflower, the Fortune, the Anne, and the Little James,” said Leo Martin, Dir. of Education, Jenny Grist Mill.
Nowadays, Plymouth can be reached without the seasickness, with just a quick trip down Route 44. And there is so much for you and your family to enjoy.
“Well the things that you really need to do here in Plymouth is go to Plymouth Plantation, which is a recreation of an original village. And Plymouth Plantation is staged in 1627. And people you talk to will only know up to 1627.”
Plymouth is a great destination for the family with several dining, shopping and hotel destinations as well.
