(FOX Providence) - As summer approaches, many of you may be trying to get your outdoor gardens going. We have some advice on how to add color to your yard.
Unlike annual plants that need to be replaced every year, perennial will give your garden color for years to come, but when planting perennial, planning is key.
"You want to put together an assortment of perennial, based on that's available for lighting in your garden. You also want to consider the bloom time..you want to have a variety of plantings, so you can have flowers at different times of the season" says Dave Frerichs, owner of Frerichs Farm and Greenhouses .
"As the season progresses, if you get a nice mix, you can have color right up until September, but you really have to do a good job of mixing."
Dave also recommends planting a few annuals within your perennial beds, in order to have some constant color.
"If you only focus on two or three different items, you're going to have a lot of gaps with no color."
