(FOX Providence) - Saying thank you to your favorite teacher or teachers doesn't have to come in the form of a gift, in fact, they might appreciate it more, if your gratitude comes in the form of a gesture.

"I think it's important for kids to realize that appreciating your teacher isn't about giving them a candle or a pound of coffee or a gift. It's really about a feeling," said Heather Grocott of The Children's Workshop.

One benefit from Teacher Appreciation Week is that teachers themselves can discover how their teaching influences each student. And this is the time where students can share that with them.

"Appreciating someone is expressing with words or a kind gesture, or making them a card or a craft that 'I appreciate you as my teacher, and I appreciate you because of these reasons. I appreciate that you teach me how to read. I appreciate that you help me with my homework'."

Teacher Appreciation Week could include fun events or activities instead of the traditional gift giving. Parents can help out by using this week as an opportunity to increase interaction between teachers and students.

"Teachers also love surprises. Can you sneak the kids in early and set a nice breakfast up, made by the kids set up on the teacher's desk. Things like that mean so much more to teachers, and it really doesn't cost much."

You can also check with your school's principal or PTO to see how they plan to celebrate the week. You can also take it a step further to see what's happening in your community.

"There are a lot of organizations. You know you can Google online what's going on in the community, visit local stores, visit teacher supply stores, to see if you can provide a gift to the teacher. Special discounts at bookstores, there's lots going on."

And if you're short on time and can't arrange a group activity. Remember how little gestures from your child often go along way with teachers. Especially when it comes to manners.

"It's so important for kids to say please and thank you to their teachers on a regular basis. And that's the number one thing. Teachers will really be receptive to that. And they will remember. That one simple word will mean a lot to a teacher."

Teacher Appreciation Week is being celebrated May 2-6.
