(FOX Providence) - Just like humans, pets need medical attention too. After injuries occur, it's important to get the body back in good health.
It's hard to see our furry friends get injured, but if they're not cared for properly, their condition can worsen. In order to get better, many owners turn to pet rehabilitation.
"The most common neurological issues are especially dachshunds is intervertebral disc disease. So, they're fine one minute, and then suddenly they become paralyzed. So, they typically require surgery, and then we do a lot of rehab afterward just to get them to walk again," said Jeff Corey, Veterinarian/Owner of Healing Paws Veterinary Rehabilitation .
If a dog has a condition, it's best for them to visit a professional to get treated.
"It really depends on the case. We do a lot of high-tec low touch, and that's heat therapy and massage. Most dogs just eat it up. It makes them feel a lot better. It also helps work out any kind of muscle knots."
As helpful as all of the treatments are, including acupuncture, there's one that stands apart from the rest. It's called the underwater treadmill.
"The water itself is about 88 degrees, so it's nice and warm. So from a pain control standpoint, that feels great. The water itself is actually harder to walk in than air, so that will help build up muscle. The treadmill is a nice constant pace, so that's the same as a land treadmill, but that will help with gate patterning," explained Jeff.
But, even with advanced treatments, bouncing back from an injury may take some time.
"Here we tend to see them two to three times a week, so you really get to know the personality. Also, there's a lot of dogs that maybe were written off, it's like, 'you're not going to get better' and we make them better."
Many dog owners treat their animals like a part of their families. So it's important when looking for treatment to find someone who wants what's best for your pet.
