(FOX Providence) - What started off as a small comment has weaved itself into a project known as "The Great Knit Off Challenge".
Cat Country 98.1's "Morning Showgram" host Tim Leary, has challenged co-host Amanda Leonardo to knit 20 scarves in 30 days. The finished product will be sent over to troops serving in Afghanistan before the holidays.
Amanda stopped by the Rhode Show to talk about how this challenge has evolved quite over the past few weeks.
"I'm still on the hook for the 20 scarves in 30 days," said Amanda, "but we started getting calls from our listeners who wanted to participate and donate scarves that they've either knit themselves or purchased and we're even partnering with Dimon Regional High School to get these off to the troops serving in Afghanistan."
The project has grown so much that Cardi's Furniture Superstores is involved.
"We were visiting the studio promoting the Aids Walk and we saw Amanda sitting there knitting and we had to ask what was happening," Nick said.
Ron explained, "Tim gave us the run down and we could resist getting involved. Aside from becoming drop-off points for the entire drive, we've hosted a few "Drive-Thru Drop Off Mornings" and those dates alone we've collected over 200 scarves."
There are certain restrictions with the scarves as they're being sent to soldiers that are actively serving.
Amanda broke it down for us: "The first restriction is they have to be 'earth-tones' dark green, browns, etc. We have to remember that these soldiers are in harms way, fighting for our freedom, getting something from home, whether home made or purchased, just getting a scarf, really boosts their spirits and morale."
Cardi's has another drive happening Friday, from 6-9am at our South Attleboro Cardi's.
Ron told us: "We'll be collecting scarves, and for everyone who donates, they'll get a free cup of coffee to take with them, compliments of Johansson's' Bakery Café which is right in our lobby."
Amanda's job isn't done yet. She'll be visiting local nursing homes, businesses, even some listeners' homes to pick up additional scarves that people have made.
"That’s right, we've got such great listeners, they always get behind when were trying to do something for the troops, or to help out our neighbors here in Rhode Island."
