HMEA holds 10th Annual Independence 5K

Cardi's Furniture an active supporter of HMEA

(FOX Providence) - The HMEA 10th Annual Independence 5K is taking place this Sunday, and Cardi’s Furniture has been an active supporter of HMEA.

Nick, Ron and Pete from Cardi’s Furniture as well as Doug MacPherson, Vice President of Development and Public Relations from HMEA, joined The Rhode Show to talk more about the event.

"It’s the 10th Annual Independence 5K Walk/Run in the park and it’s taking place on Sunday, May 22 at the EMC Corporation in the Franklin Industrial Park. They’ve got a great field there and EMC Corporation is a huge supporter of HMEA and really make this event possible. Registration is at 10 We step off at 11, and then there’s a kids fun run at 12:30, it’s a real great event," explained Nick Cardi.

HMEA stands for Horrace Mann Educational Associates after the renowned educator who was born in Franklin.

"Our mission is to affirm and promote the values, dreams and potential of people with developmental disabilities through education, support and life experiences. We’ve recently created partnerships with Tech Access Rhode Island. We’re proud to serve over 2500 clients in over 110 Massachusetts and Rhode Island communities," said Doug MacPherson, Vice President of Development and Public Relations from HMEA.

HMEA not only works with the individual, but they also focus on the family as well.

"They’re committed to working in partnership with people with developmental disabilities and their families to create individualized supports that best meet their unique needs. Their staff is highly trained and qualified, and they also actively support their staff’s quest for higher education and training as well. And we should mention, this year is the 50th anniversary of HMEA!" said Ron Cardi.

Not only is the event for a great cause, it'll also be a lot of fun.

"There's raffle prizes, food, tee shirts for participants (while they last), prizes, a kids corner filled with games and activities, a kids "fun run" and so much more. And it’s all to help HMEA continue its mission to make a difference in people's lives. We’ll be there, and we hope to see our viewers at home and online there as well," said Pete Cardi.
