EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (FOX Providence) - On Saturday, May 16, 2009, Rhode Island College held their commencement ceremonies, honoring 1,221 graduates. It was Nancy Carriuolo's first commencement as President of the institution.

Earlier this month, the RI Board of Governors for Higher Education approved a new mission statement developed by the college.

"When I was inaugurated as President last November, I talked about three themes which were going to be the focus of my work as President," said Carriuolo.

Linking arms with the community for the greater good.
Rhode Island College has a truly unique role in the state. We have a wonderful elementary school on campus—the Henry Barnard School which means that in addition to our college students, we have a very strong link with the neighborhood and all of those parents who send their youngsters to this wonderful institution.

Maintaining RIC's safe and environmentally friendly campus.
A key part of this effort is the Illuminated Walkway initiative, to create a well-lit pedestrian route lined with emergency call phones that links our east and west campuses. This is important for the safety of our campus and the wider community.

Raising and saving money to ensure affordable, quality programs for our students.
We need to focus on working with the community and thinking creatively about how we spend.
