(FOX Providence) - As more children are being diagnosed with autism, there's a growing need for alternative treatments.

One California mother says medical marijuana has made vast improvements in her autistic son. Her 10-year-old boy, Joey, is severely autistic, and weighed just 48 pounds.

But Joey's mom claims it all changed when she began giving him marijuana brownies.

Medical marijuana is often prescribed for cancer or aids patients who need to gain weight, but a prescription to a child is unusual.

The American Academy of Pediatrics opposes legalization of marijuana, but supports more research.

And though, there's absolutely no evidence marijuana cures autism, a Rhode Island mom say it's improving their children's quality of life. The mom took to her blog, saying she's using medical marijuana to ease the symptoms of her son's autism.

In her blog post "Why I Give my 9-year-old Pot" at Double X, mom Marie Myung-Ok Lee talks about how she obtained a prescription for medical marijuana for her son and the results of what she calls the "Cannabis Experiment."

Do you think since marijuana is being prescribed more, used more, and decriminalized in many states-- is it becoming too common or overly used?
