MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (FOX Providence) - This weekend is the grand re-opening of Potter League for Animals in Middletown, and it's the culmination of six years of design and construction.
"We've created a place that's very special for the animals, but just as importantly, welcoming to the people," said Christie Smith, Executive Director of Potter League.
Just north of Newport State Airport, you'll find a pet shelter that could be better described as a sanctuary.
"Well it's really designed to give the animals as much freedom and mobility, and quiet, and make the environment for them stress-free. So there's no cages, no chain-link. It's much more like living in a home," added Smith.
Potter League For Animals is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to the care and placement of loving pets. And their new facility that opens Saturday, June 20th is a testament to that dedication.
From recycling rain water and using renewable energy wherever possible, to providing fresh air in every pet's room, to even a green roof, the building is LEED-registered, and well on their way to becoming certified green.
And their pet and owner education is second to none.
"Extensive humane education classes in the schools. We have pet visitation programs to local nursing homes and hospitals. We have a pet-loss support group. We have wonderful obedience training for the public. We do all kinds of outreach to the community," said Pat Heller, Director of Development & Outreach at Potter League.
They also support spay/neuter financial assistance. And speaking of finances, before you go shopping for your next pet at your local pet shop, visit the shelter first.
"Our dogs and cats are $125. Our puppies are $150, because they come with a 4-week training session. All our animals are already spayed or neutered, they're up to date on their shots, and there's a vast array of perks that come with adoption as well, so it's really a very good deal," continued Heller.
And with just one walk down the hallway into the open-area playroom where you can interact with the animals, you will fall in love over and over.
"So, we're all about matchmaking and finding just the right pet for you. The right companion animal that's going to spend a lot of time with you. Meet your needs," continued Smith.
