(FOX Providence) - StyleWeek Providence continues and two more local designers joined The Rhode Show to showcase their work.
Maria Del Carmen Mercado and Avni Trivedi both had fashion shows at StyleWeek.
About Maria Del Carmen Mercado:
Born in the Dominican Republic, with a degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology, Maria's work is a play in energy and movement in space, while capturing colors with an infinite palette. It creates a visual language of line and movement. Every design that is generated is on one level simple but unique; when combined geometric, linear, and curved forms come together. Different dyeing techniques are employed to bring the work to it's fullest expression. With the use of objects Maria manipulates the fabric into shape. Although the work can be symbolic, decorative or memorable, it is a play with texture. Each individual contour is meant as a reminder to the viewer of a sound, shape or emotion.
The concept of this body of work emerges all in one and in the future will flourish into many other collections. I process each piece of textile from dye, layering, weaving, and other methods from raw materials. Scraps are recycled into another yardage of cloth, then becoming a patch, sleeve or a collar. The attire becomes a work of wearable art. The observer is captivated to interpret the work as they desire.
Since the late nineties Maria's work as been featured in major gallery's throughout Rhode Island, including The Atrium Gallery, Pawtucket Arts Collaborative and The RISD Museum. Currently Maria is selling her collection of scarves in Lola's Boutique in Providence.
