(FOX Providence) - As Hurricane Earl makes its way up the Eastern Coast, Rhode Island officials are urging residents to prepare an emergency kit - not only for the storm, but for any natural disaster.

Problem Solver Susan Hogan stopped by the Rhode Show to give some tips on what to include in an emergency kit.

The emergency kit should be kept at all times, just in case of a sudden emergency. A plastic bin will keep items safe from water damage. Some important items to keep in the kit include:

  • Flashlights and batteries
  • Water
  • Canned food
  • Can opener
  • Map of your area
  • First aid kit
  • Medicine
  • Everyday toiletries
  • Pet food

It is also important to have a list of emergency contacts on hand at all times.

Be aware of local Red Cross shelters and emergency locations.
